Job Hunting Online

There is just too much to do and to read on the web if you are looking for a job. I just spent the better part of an hour uploading my resume to Monster. I had to create a profile, which included choosing industries and job titles - but not too many! - you are limited to five. I didn't want to choose industries... I'm open - I can do customer support or IT support in any industry. I shouldn't have to choose. So of course, I tossed off a short complaint email to Monster.

The I started reading one of the job forums in their "community". One post about age discrimination caught my eye. Then I moved on to other posts, in the AdminAssistant forum. people have the same problems and questions regardless of what their industry or occupation is - there are still resume issues, interviewing issues to discuss, etc. i can lose myself on those job boards. And even on other job sites, I'll start searching and something will come up, and I'll want to take a look at the company's web site, and if the job sounds interesting, I'll have to think of how to tweak my resume for that job. Now, just tweaking a resume and cover letter for one job is an exhausting task, as everything has to be perfect. It took days for me to craft the right ones for the Sylvania job, and I'm sure I'll never hear back.

While surfing on Monster, and having a bit of ADD, I remembered that I wanted to link to Matt Curley on LinkedIn, since he had just "friended" me on Facebook. So I looked him up, found the right one, and sent him a message. I saw that 13 new people from John Hancock Funds had joined Linked In and saw Mike DiCarlo's name, so naturally I clicked to see what he is doing now. he was a very successful young money manager who left JHF to start his own hedge fund.

So even when they say "dont' spend all your time job hunting on the web" - I'm not sure what else to do, except attend networking meetings. Other than that, it's just surf for jobs, contact people via linked in, etc... and keep creating new resumes and cover letters.
