Well, the day started out lovely enough - Alan and I went to a late breakfast at our favorite cheap local place, and it became an even later breakfast because when they are busy it is very slow.
But when we were back at my place contentedly reading the paper, I got a call from one of Alan's neighbors, who said that his mother had fallen - the story was that she had been talking to her brother on the phone and had fallen. So I told Alan to call 911 and explain he needed the police in Newton to go to her house. But then the police called back and said she was already taken to the hospital. She had called 911 herself and even let the EMTs in the door.
Long story short, Alan and I both drove to newton-wellesley hosp in our own cars. She has a bad bump on her head and looks as if her nose might be broken. But the real problem is that the xrays or ct scan shows that she has a fracture in her neck. So they decided it would be best to move her to MGH to see a neurosurgeon.
They were having such a hard time getting her to stop moving around and lie still that I said " "tranquilizer gun". His mother hates not being in control.
Now they said they'll only keep her a couple of days - they don't know how or why she fell (she does lose her balance easily) or if she fell before or after she answered the phone.. we kept trying to get the information out of her but it was sketchy.
This brought me back to when my dad was in the ER with a collar on his neck. At first they didn't know why he was in so much pain. Turned out it was his lung cancer that had spread to his neck. The collar was basically going to keep his neck from breaking. But from there he went to a hospice.
So Alan stayed and after about 3 hours I came home. I know she thinks of me as a daughter but I've been through this before and I just don't know if I can handle this again.
Plus what is Alan going to do? He may have to move in there for a month, and then what???? it's not a good situation and I have too many other things going on right now.
So, I'm home, I'm tired, and I'm having EDY;s peppermint stick ice cream.
I waited all night for Alan to call me and finally at 1130 PM I called his cell. He wasn't apologetic, even though he had gone to his mother's to have something to eat. He takes smoking breaks - he could have called me. grrr.
