Day 6 - Trying to Stay Positive

Well, I've read just about everything I can find on the web about Lumbar Discectomies - pre-op, the operation, post- op, rehab, horror stories, success stories, etc etc. I've read about people who were immediately free of their sciatic pain. I've read about people who still had it for days, weeks or months. I've read about numbness that goes away and numbness that persists. I've read about people who re-herniated soon after, and those who have had multiple surgeries over the years. Some say it will take a while to recover, some sound as if their lives will never be quite the same. I thrill to any information that says that the nerve will eventually regenerate and that it's only numb and painful because it takes a long time for it to bounce back, having been irritated for so long.

It has only been SIX days since my surgery. I expected back pain from the surgery, but that is actually quite minimal. It is really the sciatic type pain, in my hip, thigh and calf that is still bothersome, and the total numbness of calf, ankle and toes. I went for a walk out to the dumpster. I went from the front door around to the back, then walked all the way back to the front again, for maximum distance. My leg and calf hurt but I made it ok.. Then I lay on an ice pack. Alan called from his mother's to see how I was, which was a step in the right direction.
He also brought me roses on Saturday which was very nice. I know he tries.
